My Dangerous Photography

Last week I headed out at first light to capture the lake on a very wet and foggy morning. I ran into my neighbor dog, Molly, and she went along with me.

The road to the lake is my favorite and there are beautiful scenes that I can't help but take thousands of pictures of in all the seasons. I can never get enough and I pinch myself that at this time in my life, I live in a cottage on a farm with a magical forests, creeks, lake and precious creatures great and small.

I hadn't been to the lake since all the rain has fallen this month and I thought there would be some cool pictures waiting for me and they were. It was so hauntingly beautiful, I transformed into my zone and my spirit just guided me to the spiritual places.

I was into the shoot for about 45 minutes when I came upon a rope fence where a fence was going to go up. I wasn't thinking when I put my leg over the bottom rope and put my hand down to brace myself. When I want to get to the other side of something to take a picture, I will walk over logs, wade through creeks and rivers, climb a tree, jump on a horse...ask anyone who knows me :/
Suddenly I was being ZAPPED BIG TIME from a live electrical fence. This is the second time this has happened to me. You would think I would have learned my lesson but I really mean it when I say I am in a "zone" when I am caught up in the mysterious realm of this world.  Somehow I made it to the other side and I ended up lying on the wet ground holding my cameras up. Molly was licking my face and whimpering. Boy, that really woke me up and it hurt bad. I clamored  to my feet and felt a little strange but then I saw what made me go through the fence and here it is.

I am a big fan of Joseph Campbell and he says

"When you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your field of bliss, and they open doors to you.  I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.

Joseph Campbell

Glad I made it through this door...Whew!!!

I am in awe of anyone gifted in the art of photography, Julieann. Maybe it's just my own clumsiness in handling cameras and settings and such which makes me feel that way, but when I see photographs such as yours, I'm grateful that there are people far more competent than I. Photography is a remarkable art : photographers do the same thing with an image that writers do with words...they're telling a story with every capture they create. I am especially fascinated by photos taken in foggy and misty environments...my imagination kicks in and I wonder what's on the other side of that mysterious veil. Your photos taken in the fog are wonderful!

I especially liked the shots in which Molly appeared; you were in excellent company!!!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photographs and for your generosity in doing so.

Our sweetest little dingbat!! My momma taught me not to touch electricity a long time ago!! LOL That said, I have certainly ended up upside down, backwards, or knee deep in things I don't want to think about!! And those shots were worth it!

LOL!!! Oh, I love my fellow artists. Only you guys would understand. Chip, I can't tell you how many times I have saved my cameras and taken the body injuries. Once, I saw these sheep and they were positioned just right and the only way to them was over a very rusty barbed fence. I sorta got over it but once again, I had to put my hand down to brace myself and my thumb got caught on a rusty nail. OUCH! I still got over but I ripped the side of my leg also and craweled on my stomach to just the right place for my "Irrational Geographic Sheep Picture." I felt liquid going down my hand and saw blood and muttered #@$%#@ because I didn't want to get my camera all sticky and bloody and so I quickly took my sock off and wrapped it. it is not unusual for someone to drop by after a shoot and I look like Ms. Rambo. If the picture is worth it so is the risk." knock on wood :/
Stephen, I LOVE what you said about the "Dragon's Breath." It describes it perfectly. I think about you when I am out there and all the years you played on your childhood farm in the forests and swamps. Hope you paint that farmhouse so I can see it. I hope you had a great time at the concert last night. What a cool gift you gave me. Thank you!
Ahh Lisa, I know you know and you are a girl after my own heart. No telling what trouble we could get in and imagine the treasures we could find. Someday, I would like to rent a small motor home and take a trip around the United States and take pictures of you and all who would want it...doing your thing. When I see your pictures, I know about what you had to do to get it. I will not quit and know you and my other space friends won't either or we wouldn't be taking the time to share all our lives with one another.
Once we believe in ourselves,
we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight,
or any experience that reveals the human spirit.

I really enjoyed this piece as well, Jukieann! As one who recently discovered a barbed wire fence, the hard way, while lost in the shot all I can say is tuck that camera in tight on the way down because Band-Aids are cheap; cameras expensive! At least that's the thought that was running through my mind between the stumble and the impact. I even twisted in midair to land on my hip and shoulder instead of on my back or on top of the camera.
Note to self: Keep an eye out for electric fences. A lot of those areas I roam around in are near farms and I never stopped to consider getting zapped.

Dear Juliann, Though I was laughing when I asked you to be careful, I did mean it. Am also glad that you made it through the door and am smiling as I type to you. These photographs are more than splendid and cause me to pause and reflect on the delicate and profound nature of beauty in the dawn of mists. In olden days the morning mists were known to some as Dragon's Breath for the mystical feeling that seems to envelope one while experiencing the silence and depth of the fog. Then like magic the glory is beheld as one begins to see again the complex, delicate and touching quality of the beauty of nature.
As ever be well, my dear friend it is ever my pleasure. Stephen Craig Rowe
